Celac coordinators analyze the crisis in Haiti

Tegucigalpa, Mar 19 (Prensa Latina) The national coordinators of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) held a meeting organized by Honduras last Monday to analyze the crisis that Haiti is facing.

The event, which was called urgent to consult on the Kingstown declaration on Haiti, was convened by the Deputy Foreign Minister of Honduras, Gerardo Torres, who is the coordinator of the pro tempore presidency of CELAC.

The members of CELAC agreed on the need to urgently provide aid to Haiti.

Torres explained the decisions reached at the meeting, in which the CELAC agreement was ratified, establishing that any measures regarding the Haitian crisis must be taken by Haiti without foreign pressure or interference.

It was also approved to support the agreement reached by the Caribbean Community and the representatives of the Government and Haitian civil society; the proposals of the countries in support and cooperation with Haiti (Cuba, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela) were reinforced to achieve a single regional proposal.

A second meeting will take place next Thursday, in which the work plan will be presented and the collaboration agreements with Haiti will be followed up on.

This weekend, President of Honduras Xiomara Castro urged the leaders of the bloc in her capacity as pro tempore president of CELAC to act immediately in response to the crisis that Haiti is facing.
