Following reports of the first flights between the two countries, the Deputy Spokesman for the UNSG Farhan Haq stressed the pressing need to maintain the air bridge to guarantee humanitarian assistance ahead of fresh wave of violence unleashed in the city.
“So far those are just the first flights, but we hope that there will be more regular helicopter trips so that we can have better access to Port-au-Prince,” Haq informed.
On Monday, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs confirmed that they are conducting some deliveries in the Haitian capital, where a “tense and volatile” situation is being experienced.
Since the onset of March, the World Food Program (WFP) has delivered 115,000 hot meals to displaced people in the city, while the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) are supporting services of the University Hospital La Paix, the only public institution with capacity to treat traumatisms.
Meanwhile, the International Organization for Migration warned that attacks and insecurity are pushing more and more people to seek refuge in the provinces, in addition to creating displacements within the capital.
