Brazil breaks historical record for dengue cases in 2024

Brasilia, Mar 18 (Prensa Latina) Brazil has broken the historical mark of dengue cases reported, totaling 1,889,206 in the first 11 weeks of the year, with respect to 1,688,688 reported as the maximum figure in 2015.

According to Health Ministry, the new figure is the highest since the beginning of the historical series in 2000. The third year with the highest number of dengue cases was 2023, with 1,658,816.

Brazil had reportec as many as 400,197 dengue cases in the same period last year, in less than three months.

Now, 561 deaths have been registered since January, and 1,020 are being still under investigation.

In 2023, health authorities reported 257 deaths between weeks 1 to 11.

On the other hand, the city of Sao Paulo, the most densely populated in the country and in South America, decreed on Monday a state of emergency.

Such a measure will allow more agility in the acquisition of supplies and materials, transfer of equipment or access to aid from federal government.

With 11.4 million inhabitants, Sao Paulo has registered 49,721 dengue cases and 11 deaths.

On the so-called National Mobilization Day against dengue, held on March 2, the Health Minister Nísia Trindade announced that the Federal Government will start vaccinating children against several diseases in all schools, including dengue, in the second half of the month.

“We will organize an action in Schools program, which is a joint program of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, and is strongly supported by President (Luiz Inácio) Lula (da Silva)”, she said.

During the day, health agents visited homes and provided orientation to the population.

The crusade counted on the involvement of states, municipalities, health authorities and society.

In a recent statement to the nation, Trindade stressed that everyone’s cooperation is essential, especially considering that about 75% of the Aedes aegypti breeding sites are inside homes.

Some medical literature states that the main symptoms of dengue are similar to those of other viral diseases, including: high fever with abrupt onset, which may be accompanied by headache, body and joint pain, weakness and pain behind the eyes.
