Celac pro tempore president urged to act on Haiti crisis

Tegucigalpa, Mar 17 (Prensa Latina) The president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, in her capacity as chairwoman pro tempore of CELAC, urged the leaders of the bloc to immediately act accordingly to the harsh crisis that Haiti is currently experiencing.

In a message addressed to the member countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, the Central American leader invoked the recently approved ‘Kingstown Declaration’.

This document in its 72nd paragraph underlines that the current crisis demands a solution led by Haiti that includes a broad dialogue between civil society and political actors.

The States that make up Celac are obliged to comply with the Kingstown Declaration approved by our assembly on March 1, 2024, in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, she stressed.

She added that under no excuse should they allow military action that violates the principle of non-intervention and respect for the self-determination of peoples.

Castro described the crisis in Haiti as prolonged and said that it was aggravated by the assassination of Prime Minister Jovenel Moise in 2021, and by the violence that is currently devastating the people of that Caribbean nation.

As it was learned, the Celac National Coordinators were convened in extraordinary session for tomorrow Monday at 10:00, local time in Honduras, with the purpose of implementing and following up on the actions in favor of Haiti.
