Panamanian workers condemn US blockade against Cuba

Panama, Mar 15 (Prensa Latina) The National Union of Workers of Panama (CNTP) on Friday condemned the criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade that the United States has imposed on Cuba for more than six decades.

During the Council of Delegates, which honored the memory of professor and artist Julia Olivella, the general secretary of the union, Alfredo Graell, indicated in his report that they demand an end to Washington’s hostile policy and other measures such as Cuba’s inclusion on a spurious list of nations that sponsor terrorism.

The CNTP also reaffirmed the status of a zone of peace on the continent, while passing resolutions supporting the Palestinian people and condemning the aggression and attacks by the Zionist regime of Israel against Gaza, with support from the United States.

Solidarity with the Saharawi people, whose territory is occupied by Morocco; the call to stop pressures against Venezuela; as well as the rejection of US interference in the internal affairs of Panama stand out among other statements at the forum that will meet until Saturday.

In statements to Prensa Latina, Graell pointed out that they will also assess the complex national situation in view of the general elections in May.

He reaffirmed the spirit of unity and defense of sovereignty in the face of accumulated social problems such as the poor quality of education and health care, high cost of living and against open pit metal mining.

The union leader also highlighted the resolution that will convene the 21st CNTP Ordinary National Congress from October 24 to 26, with important axes such as the analysis of the protest scenarios in July 2022 and those in late 2023 against a mining contract.

He also referred to the historic continuity of the largest labor union in Panama, founded in May 1970.
