“Today we remember Maceo and the Baraguá Protest, which, as José Martí said, is one of the most glorious in our history,” the president noted on his X account.
Díaz-Canel stressed that 146 years after the historic event, which marked the destiny and idiosyncrasy of the Cuban people, “we once again swear that #Cuba is and will be an #EternoBaraguá (Eternal Baraguá).”
The event led by General Antonio Maceo and other senior leaders, officers and soldiers under his command took place in Mangos de Baraguá, an area in the current province of Santiago de Cuba, on March 15, 1878.
That gesture, in the words of the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, took the patriotic and revolutionary spirit of the Cuban people to its highest point.
