Kenya confirms sending security force to Haiti

Nairobi, Mar 14 (Prensa Latina) President William Ruto confirmed that his country will reportedly lead a police mission to Haiti once a presidential transitional council is formed.

Kenya had decided to halt temporarily on Tuesday the deployment of a contingent of a security force to Haiti under an agreement with the United Nations for an international mission.

Ruto reiterated on Wednesday that in a conversation with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the issue, he emphasized his country’s willingness to abide by what had been agreed in terms of security for Haiti.

Several countries, including Benin, the Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, and Chad, have already shown their willingness to join the future mission, which will be led by Kenya and supported by the United Nations.

Violence in Haiti increased significantly in late February after Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced holding elections before the end of August 2025. His mandate was due to expire on February 7.

The United Nations approved the deployment of a mission in October 2023 to help Haiti’s security forces confront the armed gangs that have created chaos and violence in the Caribbean country.
