During a meeting on Wednesday to assess the work done in this sector in 2023, the president insisted on the need for a change in the concept of the domestic market, which is called to become a source of development with the joint work of all producers.

The head of State said it is essential to advance in the organization of domestic trade and ‘break the myth that everything that is state owned is inefficient.’

He stressed that Cuban trade institutions must be distinguished by the quality of the services they provide.

The Presidency of the Republic reported on its website that Díaz-Canel also referred to foreign investment, which he described as extremely challenging, especially this year, when several projects that have been designed in recent times must be completed.

He delved into aspects associated with the relations between the State and non-State sectors, both with the responsibility to contribute to Cuba’s economic development, as well as the review of the operation of importing companies; the realization of commercial activities that move idle inventories and the granting of more powers to grassroots business units.

The Cuban president explained the two strategies followed by the Government of the United States to harm the Revolution, which are based on economic asphyxiation and media intoxication, in the face of which it is essential to confront them all, he said.

He recalled the four work priorities defined by the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in 2024, referring to the strengthening of unity, the political-ideological work, the proper implementation of the economic measures presented by the Prime Minister in the National People’s Power Assembly, and the fight against negative tendencies in society.

Regarding the latter, Diaz-Canel pointed out that the domestic trade sector is one of the spheres that the population most associates with corruption and it is necessary to work to eliminate these actions.

Prime Minister Manuel Marrero, in turn, urged to continue the implementation of retail trade, to advance in the process of banking and electronic collection, and called to rescue and maintain ethics in all the service.

He pointed out that the process of implementation of the Government’s projections to correct distortions and reboost the economy, are an opportunity to make improvements in all areas and in this, human capital is essential.
