More than 20,000 deaths from Covid-19 in Guatemala after first case

Guatemala City, Mar 13 (Prensa Latina) Guatemala registered 20,286 deaths due to Covid-19 since a day like today, four years ago, the Government confirmed the first case of the disease.

Data from the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MPSAS) show that 1,290,234 people were infected with SARS-CoV-2, while there are 1,897 active positive cases in the country.

Transmission continues to be reported, the pathogen “is here to stay”, the head of the Department of Epidemiology Surveillance and Control of the Health Ministry, Antonio Paredes, explained as quoted by the local newspaper Publinews.

The specialist described the current dynamics of Covid-19 at the national level similar to that of other respiratory viruses, with a trend of decreasing infections, he stressed.

Against cases in 2021 and 2022, the reduction is 78%, partly because people “learned to live” with the disease, the doctor emphasized.

The incidence of the virus is nine percent, the isolation hospitals -he clarified- no longer exist and patients are treated as with any respiratory disease.

“The pandemic has taught us health service providers and the population a lot, because we have adapted to observe certain behaviors,” Paredes commented.

He mentioned social distancing, constant hand washing, proper etiquette when sneezing or coughing, but -he warned- we cannot let our guard down.
