Ibero-American Prize for Human Rights Education to be awarded in Cuba

Havana, Mar 13 (Prensa Latina) The Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI) convened here the V edition of the Ibero-American Prize for Human Rights Education "Oscar Arnulfo Romero".

At the headquarters of the Cuban Association of United Nations (ACNU), the director of the OEI office in Cuba, Iosmara Fernandez, presented the initiative that seeks to socialize the work carried out by civil society organizations, educational institutions, companies, public agencies and foundations in this field.

The meeting will make Cuba’s achievements in the field of human rights (HR) visible, including the associative environment, and will contribute to confront the opinion matrixes against this Caribbean nation in that area, organizers said.

At the meeting, the resident coordinator of the United Nations System in Havana, Francisco Pichón, highlighted the relevance of the award at a time when the world, and particularly Latin America, experienced a setback in education due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

For the official, this is an opportunity to identify relevant and beautiful initiatives implemented by the island to educate about human rights.

In this regard, the Spanish Ambassador to Cuba, Angel Martin, stressed the importance of teaching values in schools and other areas, with the participation of civil society, in view of the complexity of the current reality of the world, in a context of broad connectivity, taking into account the characteristics of each country.

At the event, the president of the ACNU, Norma Goicochea, reaffirmed the willingness of Cuban civil society to develop projects and accompany the State in the development of policies aimed at guaranteeing the rights of all citizens.
