Heavy storms forecast for Uruguay, particularly in Montevideo

Montevideo, Mar 13 (Prensa Latina) The Uruguayan capital and localities of the country are preparing for a day of storms and heavy rains, which a meteorologist forecasts as the worst for this city in the midst of a week of bad weather.

“The worst will be on Wednesday with almost 100 millimeters of accumulated rainfall,” meteorologist Mario Bidegain said.

In view of the forecasts, the capital’s City Hall activated the protocols for such contingencies, including the dissemination through social media and the media of a map of risk areas.

On the web page of the Montevideo Hydrometeorological Network (RHM) you can see the map that depicts dozens of zones in the department where intense storms are expected, taking into account previous situations.

Hidden streams, drainage inlets that do not provide enough water and low areas are the reasons why zones of Montevideo are flooded.

The day before it rained heavily and there were occasional gusts of wind from the south, which was forecasted by the Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (INUNET).

The institute is accused by the Municipality of the department of Rio Negro, in the northwest, of not warning in time of the arrival of a storm that caused damage in several districts over the weekend.

In view of the forecasts of heavy rains until next Sunday, the National Emergency System activated its protocols with the departments and national agencies of the country.
