The action comes five months after the country’s worst rainfalls flooded its fertile Thessaly plain, devastating crops and livestock; in addition to raising doubts about the Mediterranean country’s ability to cope with an increasingly erratic climate.
Under the rules of the European Union (EU), nations must update their flood management plans, a set of measures designed to help them mitigate risks to human lives, the environment and economic activities, every six years.
By 2023, the Commission officially notified Greece that it should finalize its plans in that regard but up to date the country has not reviewed, adopted, or communicated actions on the matter, the European body revealed in a statement.
On February, 2024 the Commission sued Bulgaria, Cyprus, Spain, Ireland, Malta, Portugal and Slovakia for failing to comply with their respective reporting obligations.
