China condemns US crackdown on TikTok

Beijing, Mar 13 (Prensa Latina) The US crackdown on the social network TikTok undermines the confidence of international investors and the normal economic-commercial order, the Chinese Foreign Ministry stressed on Wednesday.

Spokesman Wang Wenbin said that Washington’s actions will be counterproductive for the United States itself.

According to the spokesman, in recent years, the United States has not stopped repressing the social network, although ‘it has never found evidence that TikTok threatens national security.’

Members of the Senate will soon vote on the banning of this social network, a move that, according to Wang, seeks to intimidate and affects fair competition.

US President Joe Biden said that he will sign the bill to ban TikTok if the congressmen approve it.

In response to the legislative initiative, the social network claimed that banning it in the United States would deprive 170 million people of their constitutional right to freedom of expression.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has repeatedly denounced Washington’s abuse of the concept of national security to repress and contain China and its companies.

The House of Representatives has already passed legislation, called the Protecting Americans from Applications Controlled by Foreign Adversaries Act, which calls for the Chinese tech giant ByteDance to divest from TikTok or the popular social video app will be banned in the United States.

It is now up to the Senate to decide whether seven million US small businesses and 170 million American users will be left without access to this social network.
