Cuba urges industrialized countries to fulfill climate commitments

Havana, Mar 12 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez urged the industrialized countries on Tuesday to fulfill their financial commitments to the mitigation, adaptation and response to losses and damages due to climate change.

On his X account, the head of Cuban diplomacy pointed out that climate change affects Latin America and the Caribbean more frequently, with extreme phenomena such as droughts, forest fires and hurricanes.

According to statistics from the World Meteorological Organization, there is a 66-percent probability that the average annual near-surface temperature between 2023 and 2027 will exceed pre-industrial levels by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius for at least one year.

In addition, there is a 98-percent chance that at least one of the next five years, and the five-year period as a whole, will be the warmest on record.

According to a study published in the Nature Medicine journal, some four million people might die this year as a result of extreme weather events, the spread of viruses and other consequences from climate change.

The study, which quantifies for the first time the number of deaths that will occur in a year due to the various factors derived from global warming, used the science of attribution to reach these conclusions.

Cuba has warned at several international forums that the inadequate financing and lack of commitment by the developed countries in the face of climate change endanger the survival of humanity and the world.
