Named Varadero 1012, the work was executed in 546 days, through a project designed by Cuban engineers and specialists and as a contribution to the strategic objective of energy self-sufficiency of the island, Granma newspaper reported.

Juan Carlos de la Concepción, head of drilling operations, told Cuban television that oil well 1012 is located in the area of greatest prospects in the Varadero Oeste field, between the two most productive wells in the North Heavy Crude Strip, separated by approximately one kilometer, .

Adrián Bacallao, a specialist in the design of oil wells, pointed out that drilling of this magnitude is not very frequent in the world, and even less so in this geographic area.

The construction reaches more than 7,000 meters of displacement in the seabed, where its reserves are located.

Previously, the longest well in Cuba was Varadero 1011, which was completed in 2021 with a distance of 7,710 meters, the report detailed.

Despite the difficulties linked to the U.S. economic blockade against Cuba, the island’s oil industry is turning technological innovation and science into priority strategies to continue its development and advance toward the country’s energy sovereignty, the newspaper noted.
