Mexico warns that 99% of drinking water institutions are bankrupt

Mexico City, Mar 11 (Prensa Latina) Ninety-nine percent of the water operating agencies in charge of sanitation and supply of the service in 2,469 municipalities in the country, are bankrupt.

This was revealed by Rubén Muñoz Álvarez, president of the Water Resources, Water and Sanitation Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, in an extensive report published today by the newspaper Milenio.

In an interview with the newspaper, the official pointed out that this situation is due to the lack of adequate collection systems and the lack of clear rules and tariffs applicable to large consumers, which translates into a loss for the federal treasury of more than 100 billion pesos per year (more than 5.7 billion dollars).

Muñoz Álvarez considered that, despite the fact that the budget of the National Water Commission (Conagua) reached historic levels for infrastructure works, almost double that of 2019 by totaling 68,485 million pesos in 2023 (four billion dollars) and almost the same for this 2024, the problem of deficient supply and the intense drought was generating a condition of backwardness in terms of the country’s water requirements.

He stated that only 28 percent of Conagua’s federal budget is collected annually for the provision of the service.
