Concerning those applications, 48,5% were sent by men, 48,5% were sent by women and 3% percent were sent by LGTBI community members, IGM detailed while adding that those are citizens who fled their territories for different reasons, and were accepted in compliance with the law.
In terms of nationalities, 39% was from El Salvador; followed by Honduras (27%); Nicaragua (23%); Venezuela (7%9; and others (4%).
The IGM data showed a 2% rise in new refugee applications compared to February 2023. At the beginning of March, Guatemala made official the implementation of a new Migration Policy, in which at least 41 entities are involved.
“This is a guiding instrument so that institutional efforts are aimed at ensuring comprehensive care for all migrants,” the IOM said in a statement.
