Guatemala catches speedboats with likely illicit substances

Guatemala City, Mar 11 (Prensa Latina) Guatemala’s Ministry of Defense located, pursued and intercepted another two speedboats in the Pacific, with 46 packages of likely illicit substances, the Ministry informed on Monday.

Brigadier General Carlos Antonio Medina Juarez detailed on a video released, regarding the first one, that it was captured by the Navy 259 kilometers offshore the department of Escuintla, during operation Calamar.

Medina Juarez recalled that the operation has been conducted for over a month against drug trafficking and all international structures, pointing out that they are aware of the transportation to the country.

“We seized 38 packages thanks to the work of international intelligence agencies from Mexico, Colombia and the United States,” senior official described.

The authority added that the boat -named Shalon I- was carrying three men, who were guarding the alleged drug shipment.

The Army Spokesman Ruben Tellez explained that the boat docked on Monday at the Pacific Naval Command and that there, authorities will determine the identity and nationality of the three detainees.

Tellez referred to another vessel 740 kilometers away, also in the Guatemalan Pacific, which sank, but they rescued three people, who claim to be of Mexican nationality, and eight packages.

The spokesman of the military agency assured that several of the packages were recovered from the sea, which, along with the vessel, would be arriving on land tomorrow.
