Dominican political parties start campaigning

Santo Domingo, Mar 11 (Prensa Latina) Some Dominican political parties started this weekend their electoral campaign with a view to the presidential and congressional elections on May 19, as soon as the Central Electoral Board proclaimed their beginning on Friday, local press reported on Monday.

Authorities of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) went to El Seibo province, where its leader Jose Ignacio Paliza accompanied Senator Santiago Zorrilla, who aspires to be re-elected in Congress until 2028.

Likewise, the leader of the People’s Force party, Leonel Fernandez, resumed this weekend the popular meetings to listen to the social sectors and to present his government plan.

The 70-year-old and three-time Dominican president, who resigned from the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and switched to FP, met with merchants of the Cristo Rey market, to whom he said that complaints about shortages and high prices prevail across the country.

Diario Libre reported that the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) mobilized this weekend in 23 of the 32 provinces of the country, aimed at instructing the political leaders of the communities.

Over eight million Dominicans are being called to the polls on upcoming May 19 so as to elect among nine candidates -two women and seven men- the president of the Republic until 2028.
