Discussions begin in Guatemala to reform the Electoral Law

Guatemala City, Mar 11 (Prensa Latina) The entity in charge of voting in Guatemala will begin the process of discussing proposals to reform the Electoral and Political Parties Law prior to its presentation to Congress.

Groups have provided a total of 111 criteria so far, of which, 106 correspond to social organizations, according to data from the Update and Modernization Commission created for this purpose.

The president of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), Blanca Alfaro, urged all political parties to approach the entity to get involved in the analysis.

The body previously stated that 132 organizations (115 civil entities, including academics), and 19 political forces are registered for the debates; everything will remain in the hands of Congress afterward.

The Commission comprises TSE magistrates, a representative and substitute of each current political party, as well as social and academic organizations accredited before the electoral body.

Guatemala carried out the first exercise in 2019, in which 78 proposals for reforms to the law were presented and 1,041 approaches were systematized, but the reforms were not carried out mainly due to Covid-19.
