The meeting, which involves heads of government, will be the last in a series of efforts by the bloc aimed at advancing a political dialogue and reaching a consensus in Haiti, which is facing a political crisis due to the escalation of armed attacks by gangs against the presidential palace and the police headquarters.
According to the official call of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the meeting is chaired by the current president of the organization, Irfaan Ali, of Guyana, and brings together his counterparts from the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and representatives of eight international partner countries and the United Nations.
To date, Haitian armed gangs have attacked key infrastructure in Haiti, including two prisons, allowing most of its 3,800 inmates to escape and demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who was due to leave office in February, but instead, he agreed to share power with the opposition until new elections are held.
According to reports, Henry is stranded in Puerto Rico after visiting Kenya during the outbreak of violence as Port-au-Prince and western Haiti remain in a state of total insecurity.
