News outlets stand out President Bukele’s bet on Haiti

San Salvador, Mar 10 (Prensa Latina) Local and international news outlets on Sunday, stood out the statement of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele that he could fix the situation in Haiti.

Haiti is mired in a spiral of violence, surged since President Jovenel Moïse’s assassination in 2021.

“We can fix it. But we will need a UN Security Council resolution, the consent of the host country, and that all the expenses of the mission are covered,” Bukele posted on X.

The Salvadoran head of State assured that if the UN Security Council and the Haitian Government accept it, he could fix the situation, according to the daily digital journal “El Mundo” in its Sunday edition.

Bukele’s Government applies an effective security policy against gangs that allowed the arrest of over 78,000 alleged members or collaborators of those groups.

In January 2023, Salvadoran Vice President Felix Ulloa held a meeting with Haitian authorities, and announced that El Salvador would install an office in that nation to advise how to crack down criminality, although no further reports on the issue were made public.

Meanwhile, media outlets such as Europa Press echoed the proposal after Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, in recent weeks became the scene of an upsurge in violence between gangs fighting for controlling the city .

Last week, a gang leader threatened the Haitian Government with civil war if its Prime Minister Ariel Henry did not resign.

On Thursday, Haiti’s Government extended for another month the state of emergency in its West department, where the capital is located, after escalating gang violence aimed at overthrowing the executive, while Henry remains abroad unable to land in the country.
