AU’s Peace and Security Council worried over insecurity in DRC

Kinshasa, Mar 10 (Prensa Latina) African Union (AU)’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) is worried over the insecurity situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Radio Okapi reported on Sunday.

In a statement, the PSC disclosed that it strongly condemned the human rights violations committed by different armed groups, such as the March 23 Movement (M23), the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), and the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), among others.

The Council further drew attention to the disastrous humanitarian situation triggered by the violence in the eastern region of the country, which continues to harm the affected communities.

The statement, issued after a PSC meeting in which the conflict was discussed, as well as the deployment of the Southern African Development Community mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC), called on the AU Commission, Member States, and the international community to contribute to the delivery of aid.

The AU demanded the immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities, as well as the creation of humanitarian corridors to ease the delivery of humanitarian aid to Congolese affected by war.

It also urged for the cantonment and disarmament of all armed groups active in the DRC.

The PSC reaffirmed its approval of the deployment of the SAMIDRC, and asked the AU Commission to provide all the necessary support to that force, although it granted its conviction that the best solution is not a military one, but the implementation of the Nairobi and Luanda Processes, which are committed to a diplomatic solution.
