Glaucoma affects one million Italians and half are unaware of it

Rome, Mar 8 (Prensa Latina) Almost one million Italians suffer from glaucoma, a degenerative disease that can lead to blindness, but half of them do not know it, so urgent actions are needed to diagnose this disease and fight it, a study indicates today.

An analysis carried out by the Italian Section of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), together with the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired (UICI), released on the occasion of the celebration, from March 10 to 16, of World Glaucoma Week, warns about the seriousness of this problem in the country.

This disease, which damages the optic nerve, usually occurs when fluid accumulates in the front part of the eye, and is the main cause of blindness in people over 60 years old, but it can be prevented if treated early.

In a press release, published on the website of the Il Messaggero newspaper, it is pointed out that during these seven days, starting next Sunday, the UICI Territorial Sections, in coordination with the IAPB, will carry out initiatives aimed at informing the population about this disease and facilitating its timely diagnosis.

A wide campaign will be developed at national level which will include the distribution of brochures in pharmacies, bars, the main points of tourist interest, with the installation of stands in local markets for their distribution, and ophthalmologic check-ups will be enabled, said the note.
