Dominican women urged to reject the oppression suffered by them

Santo Domingo, March 7 (Prensa Latina) The Committee for Unity and Women's Rights (Cudem) today urged Dominican women and society in general to reject all forms of oppression and exploitation of which they are victims.

Regarding the commemoration tomorrow of International Women’s Day, Cudem affirmed the patriarchal and capitalist system places them as a subordinate human group, attacking the impoverished sectors, marked by the marginality and racism that predominate in this society.

The organization expressed in a note sent to the media that it is outrageous that governments constantly talk about development and growth, progress and a solid economy, but not about the poor distribution of wealth, which has concrete expression in the lives of women.

In this sense, it commented that in access to economic autonomy, the Dominican Republic occupies position 81 compared to 146 States, with a salary difference between men and women of 30 percent, according to data from the World Bank.

Cudem also referred to the limitations they have in controlling their sexuality and reproductive capacity, as well as the absence of comprehensive education on issues such as unwanted pregnancies at an early age in life.

It pointed out that only in the first three weeks of this year, eight femicides were recorded in the country, not counting the 51 registered in 2023.

She also mentioned the limitations of women in decision-making in different areas, including political-institutional tasks, with the restrictions imposed by the sexist culture in the structures of the party system.

“All of these are evident signs that the fear of the weight of aggressive masculinity, economic restrictions and the workload, which includes housework and raising children, are typical in the lives of the majority of women in our country,” it said.

Cudem affirmed that social inequality is the true country brand in the Dominican Republic, since we are a society of unequals, and especially due to gender status, it added.

For the reasons stated above, Cudem raised the need for women and men to deeply understand this reality, demonstrating rebellion against it, and rejecting all forms of discrimination against that segment of the population.

In turn, it called for overcoming patriarchy and decolonization in thought and action, to achieve the social transformation that Dominican society demands to break the sociocultural structures that make up the systems of oppression and exclusion.

The feminist organization stated that those who run this country, the government, and the authorities in the different public powers, have to know that women’s lives are valuable.
