Havana, Mar 7 (Prensa Latina) Cuban leaders congratulated Rebel Army Commander Julio Camacho Aguilera on his 100th birthday on Thursday, after an intense life dedicated to Cuba's revolutionary project.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel and National People’s Power Assembly (Parliament) President Esteban Lazo recognized the work of the veteran Cuban guerrilla and political leader, who held tasks entrusted by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.

“Happy birthday to Rebel Army Commander Julio Camacho Aguilera, who today celebrates his 100th birthday with a fruitful life dedicated to the Homeland and the Revolution,” Lazo wrote on his X account.

Camacho Aguilera was one of the main organizers of the popular uprising in Cienfuegos, central Cuba, on September 5, 1957. After the failure of the action, he fled the city and later joined the Rebel Army.

During the armed confrontation against Fulgencio Batista’s dictatorship (1952-1958), he led a group of insurgents in the mountain ranges of eastern Guantánamo province.

After the triumph of the Revolution led by Fidel Castro in 1959, he was appointed as Minister of the National Transportation Corporation, served as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in several provinces, and was a member of the PCC Political Bureau for more than a decade.

Commander Camacho Aguilera also holds the Doctor Honoris Causa title, granted by the western province of Pinar del Rio.
