The Coordination Office of the National Council for Public Participation of the GERD reported that after 13 years of construction, 95% of the dam was completed, this includes the completion of 98,9% of the civil works and will soon conclude the electromechanical part.
Regarding this, the chief engineer of the project, Kefle Horo, mentioned that currently only two units are operational and in the following months five additional units will start generating energy.
The Bureau’s Public Relations Director, Hailu Abraham, commented that, once completed, the hydroelectric project will produce 5,150 megawatts. It currently has a capacity of 540 megawatts with two turbines, he said. The dam contains 42 billion cubic meters of water and is expected to increase to 74 billion cubic meters once completed, he said.
