Newly-elected Hungarian president signs Sweden’s NATO membership

Tamas-Sulyok-1
Budapest, Mar 5 (Prensa Latina) The newly elected president of Hungary, Tamás Sulyok, signed the ratification of Sweden's membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), previously approved by the National Assembly (unicameral Parliament).

On his first day in office, Sulyok initialed the decision that won 188 votes in favor, six against and four abstentions in the legislature on February 26.

On the same day, the vote on Sulyok’s candidacy for his current post was held, and 135 assembly members voted in favor, while five opposed. The opposition parties abstained.

Sweeden will be the 32nd nation to join the war alliance, since Finland joined in April 2023.

The decision follows a recent visit to this capital by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, which, according to the parties, will help to build “a fair and respectful relationship between the two countries beyond differences of opinion.”

Budapest delayed its decision to negotiate with the European Union to unblock billions of euros in frozen funds, according to experts.

The regional mechanism strongly criticizes the Hungarian executive over issues related to human rights and freedom of expression in the country.

Hungary is also a stumbling block for the EU body to approve new sanctions against Russia that are not supported by the Orban administration.
