The disease was detected in an adult resident in the rural area of Montevideo, with no history of travel outside the country.
The patient is hospitalized and is progressing stably, according to the MSP statement.
The laboratory technique determined that the dengue serotype in his case is DEN-1, unlike the first infected (DEN-2).
“This finding is relevant not only because of the occurrence of a second case in two distant areas of the same department (Montevideo), but also because the risk of infection and/or complications during the course of the disease may be increased,” the report warns.
It adds that although the epidemiological investigation is ongoing, the results point to “the circulation of at least two serotypes of the four serotypes currently confirmed in neighboring countries”.
The Ministry of Public Health urged the population to maximize prevention and control recommendations aimed at minimizing exposure to the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
