Leo Brouwer, embraced to Cuba and his guitar, celebrates his birthday

Havana, Mar 1 (Prensa Latina) As if he was born for it, the prestigious Cuban musician Leo Brouwer embraces his guitar to get from it the most exquisite harmonies, and Cuba applauds and honors him, especially today, when he is celebrating his 85th birthday.

Considered one of the most outstanding and influential figures in 20th century music, the orchestral conductor, pedagogue and cultural promoter, winner of the National Music Award (1998), has made his career prestigious with countless compositions: chamber, symphonic and electroacoustic works, for guitar, cinema and concerts.

Brouwer began his musical training in the family environment, then he improved his skills with that instrument with Isaac Nicola, between 1953 and 1954, and later at the Peyrellade Conservatory in Havana.

He made his professional debut in 1955, and a year later he joined the Cine Club Visión, a society made up of young art lovers, which brought together filmmakers, musicians, theater artists, painters and critics.

Brouwer worked as a musical advisor to Cuban radio and television, and was the director of the Music Department of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), where he created and directed the so-called Grupo de Experimentación Sonora (Sound Experimentation Group).

He also conducted the Symphony Orchestra of Córdoba, Spain, and the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.
