“We reiterate our strong opposition to the principles presented by Netanyahu for the day after the war and our warning about the seriousness of what is stated in this announcement,” Abbas wrote in a letter sent to leaders of several countries.
He also denounced the proposal to build thousands of homes for Jewish settlers, reflecting “the stated policies of denying the Palestinian people and imposing Israeli sovereignty over the entire territory, stretching from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River.”
“The goal of the extremist Israeli government is not only to undermine the chances of achieving peace based on the two-state solution but rather to intensify campaigns of ethnic cleansing and displacement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem,” he stressed in the letter.
Abbas reaffirmed that “we are willing to work to establish security, peace, and stability in the region within the context of a comprehensive peace plan,” and insisted on the end of the aggression against Gaza and the increase in the volumes of humanitarian aid to the territory while criticizing plans to displace its population. He also called for forcing Israel to respect international humanitarian law.
“We appreciate your determined stance on the need to achieve a two-state solution under international legitimacy, and your rejection of any alternative proposal that seeks to end this idea,” he expressed to the leaders.
The president urged support for Palestine to obtain full membership in the United Nations through a decision of the Security Council. “It is necessary to apply practical steps that can be implemented quickly to approve a comprehensive peace plan with international guarantees and a timetable to end the Israeli occupation,” he wrote.
The letter was sent to the presidents of China, Xi Jinping; the United States, Joe Biden; Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; and Russia, Vladimir Putin, as well as to the UN Secretary-General António Guterres; the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz; and the prime ministers of Italy, Giorgia Meloni; Ireland, Leo Varadkar; and Norway, Jonas Jar Store.
