In the men’s competition, Cuba will rely on Jonathan Charon (60 kg), Orlando Polanco (66 kg), Magdiel Estrada (73 kg), Ivan Silva (90 kg) and Andy Granda (over 100 kg) and in the women’s competition on Maylin del Toro (63 kg), Idelannis Gomez (70 kg) and Idalys Ortiz (over 78 kg).
The main aspiration of Cuban athletes in the Uzbek competition will be to add points to the ranking for the qualification to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which closes next June 24.
Charon, 52nd in the ranking, will start the competition for Cuba against Kazakh Yeldos Smetov, Olympic and world medalist, which foresees a strong fight. If he wins, the Cuban will have to face world champion Lujumi Chkhvimiani, from Georgia.
