Kingston, Feb 28 (Prensa Latina) Preliminary results show the ruling Jamaica Labor Party with an advantage in the counting of votes cast in the recent local elections, while the country awaits the final results of the process.

According to the electoral authorities, so far this political force triumphed in seven municipalities and the opposition National Party won four.

The scrutiny also revealed a tie in the parishes (districts) of Kingston and Saint Andrew.

It is expected that this day the count will be concluded and the 228 mayors and councilors of the Caribbean country will be defined.

Jamaica held its local elections last Monday and from the beginning these two parties were considered winners without confirming the final result.

Certain offices of the Electoral Commission are in charge of counting the ballots after it was known that only 29,6% of the 2.1 million voters went to the polls.

A total of 499 candidates contested the election, most of them belonging to the Labor and National parties.

All the candidates have been campaigning for the last three weeks to present the programs and initiatives for the public good that they plan to implement if they win the favor of the citizens.

The Antillean State held in 2016 the last local elections and the Labor Party triumphed in most municipalities.

This process is carried out every four years, but Jamaica did not convene it in 2020 due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and then postponed it three times.
