Flooded streets, avenues with sinkholes and hospitals evacuated are also the result of the first month of rains in this South American nation, the SGR noted.
The institution also reported that 733 dangerous events took place in 23 provinces. However, Manabí, Guayas, Los Ríos, Esmeraldas and Santa Elena were the hardest hit by the winter, as six people were killed, and 601 were affected, 23,538 houses were damaged, 74 were destroyed, more than 23,000 hectares of crops were lost and 22.36 kilometers of roads were damaged.
The city of Chone, in the Ecuadorian province of Manabí, reported losses worth 30,000 dollars in supplies and medicines due to the floods which affected its hospital.
The city’s healthcare system, declared in a disaster situation, has been the most damaged by heavy rains in the last weeks, as Napoleón Dávila Córdova and that of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS) collapsed.
In this context, the Consortium of Autonomous Provincial Governments of Ecuador (CONGOPE) demanded that the national Government urgently transfer the financial resources owed to address the situation.
However, the Executive Branch claims to have delivered more than 11,000 humanitarian assistance kits.
Users on social media and local media question whether this is enough in view of the damage caused by the rainfalls.
