At a press conference, the Secretary General of CONUSI Marco Andrade rejected that the Minister of Labor and Labor Development Doris Zapata and Panama’s President Laurentino Cortizo violate the current Labor Code and even the Constitution, which establish rules in that regard.

Andrade, who cited article 377 of that legal tool, reminded that the law supports the right of unions to have a bank account, in which they deposit their savings and union dues.

The Executive, in collusion with employers, as an attitude of revenge against the “Union Nacional de los Trabajadores de la Construcción y Similares”(Unique National Union of Builders and Alike)- SUNTRACS’ Union closed its accounts in the “Caja de Ahorros” (Box of Savings), he added.

In that sense, the union leader announced that the groups that make up that staff will actively join the street actions to demand justice and the reopening of the SUNTRACS accounts, such as the 24-hour general warning strike on March 19.

They will further protest in the next hours in front of the facilities of the Attorney General’s Office and the Supreme Court of Justice to enforce the ruling which declared unconstitutional the contract signed between the Executive and Minera Panama, in addition to the environmental damage it causes.

CONUSI will also support any initiative such as the march to the Presidency, led by the “Pueblo Unido por la Vida” (People United for Life) alliance, and other mobilizations across the country, rioting against the high cost of living, the Social Security Fund and open-pit metal mining.

“They are not going to bend us and in that fight will be CONUSI, SUNTRACS and all the people,” he remarked.
