Hungarian Parliament elects Tamás Sulyok as head of State

Budapest, Feb 26 (Prensa Latina) Hungary's National Assembly (Parliament) elected Tamás Sulyok, an ultra-nationalist jurist, as the country's new President on Monday.

Sulyok will replace Katalin Novák, who resigned two weeks ago after revelations that she had pardoned a man convicted of helping to cover up sexual abuse in a children’s home.

Sulyok previously served as the president of the Constitutional Court.

He was elected with the backing of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party, which controls two-thirds of the Legislature.

Novak, 46, has been the president of Hungary since 2022.

She previously served as Minister for Family from 2020 to 2021.
