Congress takes step prior to massive dismissal of magistrates in Peru

Lima, Feb 26 (Prensa Latina) The unpopular Congress of the Republic of Peru took on Monday the step prior to the summary dismissal of the seven members of the National Justice Board (JNJ), the body that appoints, evaluates and removes judges and prosecutors.

A score of members of the permanent commission, from a Parliament with over 80% disapproval in the polls, voted in favor of a previous report of a subcommission in favor of the dismissal of the important body.

The result left the fate of the JNJ in the hands of the plenary, where the extreme right-wing benches and their allies also have a majority, so the dismissal is taken for granted.

The permanent commission voted for the dismissal of Imelda Tumialan, Ines Tello, Antonio de la Haza, Aldo Vasquez, Maria Zavala, Guillermo Thornberry and Henry Avila, among whom the last one resigned last week.

The approved report recommends the dismissal of the magistrates and their disqualification for violating the Constitution, due to the fact that Ines Tello was still in office after reaching 75 years old, and the Magna Carta establishes that to be a member of the JNJ one must be at most 75 years old.

The affected sides pointed out that the Constitution indicates that the members of the NJB are elected for five years, and the board interpreted that the five-year term should prevail, even after 75 years old.
