The financial contribution will be allocated to three WTO trust funds: the Fisheries Financing Mechanism, the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIM) and the Fund for Women Exporters in the Digital Economy (WEIDE), the organization indicated.
As explained by the source, the government commitment was announced this Saturday in Abu Dhabi by the Emirati Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, shortly before the start of the Thirteenth Ministerial Conference (MC13) of the WTO in that city.
According to the director general of the institution, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the WTO is “deeply grateful for the generous contribution”, which reinforces collective efforts to improve the sustainability of fisheries, facilitate trade for LDCs and empower businesswomen.
The aid is also timely, he added, because it exemplifies the fundamental role of the United Arab Emirates as host of MC13, where “such initiatives can flourish and make a tangible difference on a global scale.”
