President Arevalo projects an inclusive Guatemala with equity

Madrid, Feb 23 (Prensa Latina) Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arevalo affirmed on Friday that he intends to lift his country out of poverty, as he criticized the elites who attempted a coup d'état.

In a meeting with the press, promoted by the EFE agency Tribuna at the Casa de America in Madrid, the president projected measures to make Guatemala an inclusive country, with equity and the relevant role of native peoples.

Responding to Prensa Latina, Arevalo stressed that it is not possible to speak of reconciliation with respect to the political-criminal elites who boosted “a coup d’état in slow motion.”

On January 14, after obscure maneuvers that tried to boycott him, he took his post conquered at the ballots, and only international pressure and that of the Guatemalan majorities paved the way for his presidency.

Arevalo acknowledged that part of those responsible for that ‘coup d’état’ are still in the institutions, and admitted that although he does not have the power to remove the Attorney General Consuelo Porras from office, he is studying the means to force her to resign.

In the meeting, conducted by the president of EFE, Miguel Angel Oliver, Arevalo said that in a month and a week of mandate he adopted measures to clean up the institutions of corruption, although he recognized that much remains to be done.

Education, health, infrastructure, investments for development in all areas and the relevant participation of native peoples are at the top of his agenda, the president noted.
