Deputy Minister of Health Ricardo Peña acknowledged that the unstoppable advance of dengue fever is exceeding the capacities of the services; therefore, the possibility of declaring a sanitary emergency is being analyzed.
The deputy minister added that there are Peruvian regions in which “it is evident that the response of the health services to the epidemic is not adequate.”
Official figures indicate that in the first seven weeks of 2024, Peru has registered 24,981 cases of dengue fever, almost double the 12,624 reported in the same period of 2023; while deaths from the disease were 28 in that period of 2024 and 18 in the same period of 2023.
