Havana, Feb 23 (Prensa Latina) Cubans on Friday recalled the inauguration, 46 years ago, of the mausoleum dedicated to the Soviet internationalist soldiers that pays tribute to young combatants from the extinct Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) who died here in solidarity missions.

On this date in 1978, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the heroic Red Army of the USSR, the monument was inaugurated by the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Army General Raul Castro, who was the Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) at that time.

Located west of this capital, the site holds the remains of 67 fighters from the then Soviet Union between 20 and 30 years old, who died as a result of accidents, while offering their solidarity assistance in FAR institutions from 1960 to 1964.

Local media reported that since the inauguration, the eternal flame in memory of the Soviet internationalists has been lit at the site, and in front of it, young people from the former Soviet Union buried a time capsule with a message dedicated to the 2068 youths.

Several Russian delegations consider the mausoleum an obligatory stop during their stay in Cuba because it represents a piece of Russia on Cuban soil.

Consequently, the site was visited in 2014 by the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, and the entourage that accompanied him during his visit to Havana.

In February 2016, as part of his official visit to Cuba, the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, laid a wreath in front of the monument to the Soviet internationalist soldiers.
