The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it did not give the green light to any of these technologies, which do not penetrate the skin.
Although the health agency did not specify brands; it does refer that sellers of these smart watches and rings advertise the use of “noninvasive techniques” to measure blood glucose.
“However, these devices do not directly test blood glucose levels, urging consumers to avoid purchasing them for that purpose,” the FDA statement noted.
David Klonoff, M.D., of Sutter Health Mills-Peninsula Medical Center in San Mateo, California, who has researched diabetes technology for 25 years, noted that several advanced technology companies are working on noninvasive blood sugar devices, but none has created a product accurate and safe enough, to gain FDA approval.
