Railway workers go on strike in Argentina

Buenos Aires, Feb 21 (Prensa Latina) The La Fraternidad Union, which brings together Argentine railway workers, will carry out a national strike in demand of salary improvements.

The organization explained in a statement signed by its general secretary, Omar Maturano, that the strike would last throughout the day.

“We decided to exercise the right to strike in response to the lack of a joint discussion (alluding to negotiations between workers and employers to achieve increases in payments and improvements in working conditions) and an adequate salary proposal in the face of rampant inflation that deteriorates salaries,” the statement says.

Furthermore, it indicated that the current situation causes unrepairable damage to contracted personnel, and affirmed that the measure will be adopted “within the explicit recognition of Argentine constitutional law, because as General Perón (former president) said: “within the law, everything; Outside the law, nothing.”

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses, the general level of the Consumer Price Index in Argentina increased 20.6 percent in January, while the interannual growth was 254.2.

Recently, the leader of the General Confederation of Labor Héctor Daer accused the Executive and the businessmen of causing the negotiations of the Minimum, Living and Mobile Wage Council to fail and assured that this organization will carry out the necessary measures. “They want to achieve collective impoverishment. With these policies, the scenario will become unsustainable for the people. The Government must reflect,” he said.

In recent days, there have been significant increases in the costs of public transportation, food, electricity, medicines, and school supplies, among other things.
