Brazil hosts first G20 ministerial meeting

Brasilia, Feb 21 (Prensa Latina) Rio de Janeiro is hosting this Wednesday and Thursday the first ministerial meeting of the G20, which brings together the 19 main economies of the world and the European Union.

Official sources stated that the meeting marks the activities before the summit of heads of State and Government in November, also in Rio.

Among those confirmed for the meeting are the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, and the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov. Authorities from the invited countries and representatives of 12 international organizations will also be present.

Some 350 reporters and journalists from the press, TV, radio, websites, printed newspapers, podcasts and social networks from Russia, Japan, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, China, England, the United States and the United Arab Emirates will be taking part in the event. When the meetings are closed, the foreign ministers of each country will decide whether or not to grant interviews to the press.

Media outlets assure that the summit will try to establish points on the agenda of President Luiz Inácio Lula’s government, such as the fight against inequality and the new global governance, in a complex international context.

The foreign ministers will discuss current tensions and the reform of global governance bodies, such as the United Nations Security Council.

The war between Israel and Hamas and the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip will also be a point of debate, as will issues such as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and political tensions between powers such as the United States, China, and India.

Bilateral or multilateral meetings between countries will also be held throughout the conference.
