After two previous resolutions failed, the UN body is debating a draft document presented by Algeria that also calls for respect for international law, the protection of civilians and the release of hostages.
However, the request for an end to hostilities might again hit the rocks, according to US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who considered that the proposal “might jeopardize delicate negotiations, derailing ongoing and exhaustive diplomatic efforts.”
It would be the third time that a binding ceasefire appeal has failed in the Security Council due to the US veto once again.
