The PNC has launched 64 raids in the capital, in several municipalities of the metropolitan area and five other departments targeted the Crazy Gangster cliques of the Barrio 18 and the South Side Century, of the Mara Salvatrucha, and organized crime, according to reports.
The PNC reported that the raids had been launched in properties located in Guatemala City, Mixco, Villa Nueva, Villa Canales, Santa Catarina Pinula, Chinautla, Amatitlan, San Pedro Sacatepequez, San Lucas Sacatepequez, Escuintla, Coatepeque, Quiche, Izabal and Santa Rosa.
Led by the Public Prosecutor’s Office against the Crime of Extortion of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, they were able to resolve 11 cases opened against extortionist gangs.
Five days ago, the PNC announced the apprehension since early January of 120 people involved in extortion, an evil that plagues the country.
Interior Minister Francisco Jimenez, previously promoted other specialized mega-operations in prisons, in order to control criminality caused from those jails, which experts deem as the scourge’s origin.
Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arevalo assured Guatemala is moving forward by cracking down extortion as he presented the milestones of the first 30 days of his administration on February 14.
