Guatemala’s MSPAS suggests to resume classes despite outbreak

Guatemala City, Feb 20 (Prensa Latina) Guatemala’s Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS) suggested to resume classes in the municipalities affected by the outbreak of acute neurological disease.

The alert is kept, but there is a depletion in the number of patients with the already confirmed Guillain Barre Syndrome, the MSPAS Minister Oscar Cordon stated to the press.

The authority requested to reinforce preventive measures of cooking at canteens in schools to avoid risks.

Cordon described as a good sign the drop in the number of cases in the last 10 days, “although we are waiting for some samples to be sent to the National Laboratory,” the minister underscored.

Regarding the syndrome’s cause, Cordon affirmed that this is one of the most frustrating issues in epidemiology and indicated to ramp up surveillance; thus, they decided to send more teams to the field to continue the revision of the statistics.
