Ecuador city flooded after heavy rains

Quito, Feb 20 (Prensa Latina) The Emergency Operations Committee (EOC) in the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil has been meeting since early this morning due to flooding caused by heavy rains there.

In the last 48 hours, more than 400 liters of water per square meter have fallen in this city in the coastal region of the Andean country, according to reports from the National Institute of Hydrology and Meteorology (Inamhi).

The mayor of Guayaquil, Aquiles Alvarez, warned through his social network X that sectors of the Posorja parish, belonging to that city in the province of Guayas, have been under water.

It is expected that this Tuesday a medical, fumigation and river cleaning brigade will arrive to the area.

Recently, the National Committee for the Regional Study of the El Niño Phenomenon (Erfen) detailed that some 10,710 people in Ecuador have been affected so far by the rains associated with the El Niño phenomenon.

Meanwhile, the director of Oceanography and Meteorology of the Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute of the Navy (Inocar), Michael Linthon warned that the effects of this climatic event could extend until April in the Andean country.

In an interview offered to Teleamazonas channel, Linthon explained that, although the climatic event is present with more moderate conditions than initially forecast, above-normal rains are still expected throughout the national territory.

On the other hand, specialists of the Public Health Ministry of this South American nation warned about the increase of diseases such as leptospirosis and dengue, due to the floods caused by the rainfall, especially in the provinces of the Ecuadorian Littoral.

The Ministry warned that vector control and epidemiological surveillance are essential, as well as fumigation and cleaning campaigns in homes, since mosquitoes breed easily in hot and humid areas and hotter places attract rainfall.

So far there are four people dead from dengue fever in Ecuador and according to the Ministry of Health here, in the first weeks of this year 5,337 sick people have been registered, the largest number is concentrated in the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas, with 994, followed by Manabí with 838, Los Rios with 644 and Guayas with 365.
