AU calls for Cuba’s removal from list of terrorist countries

Addis Ababa, Feb 19 (Prensa Latina) For the first time, the Assembly of the African Union (AU) called for the removal of Cuba from the US State Department's unilateral list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism.

At the 37th ordinary session of the African political organization which concluded on Monday, the AU Member States raised this demand and endorsed for the fifteenth consecutive time the condemnation of the continuous and illegal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by Washington against Havana.

The text reaffirmed support for the Resolution on this issue adopted every year by the UN General Assembly and regretted the measures implemented by the U.S. government since November 9, 2017 which reinforce that unilateral action and its deep concern over the extension of the extraterritorial nature.

The African Union recognizes that the blockade is the main obstacle to the implementation by Cuba of, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations and shares this concern because of the importance that as a continental organization it attaches to the achievement of the objectives of that agenda.

President Barack Obama (2009-2017) removed Cuba from the list in 2015 after admitting that Cuba is not a sponsor of terrorist acts, but, Donald Trump,a week before leaving the White House, reimposed the designation.
