Angola sanctioned by World Anti-Doping Agency

Luanda, Feb 19 (Prensa Latina) The Angolan Olympic Committee (COA) faces sanctions from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) due to the failure to meet the deadline to adapt its sports legislation to the statutes of that organization.

WADA had set January 22 as the deadline for adopting the legislation, whose discussion process has been delayed and its approval is scheduled for a vote in the National Assembly on the 28th.

As a result, the Angolan flag will not be able to fly in international competitions, the COA will not be able to host or organize any events and its representatives will not be eligible for WADA positions.

COA president Gustavo da Conceição said the agency’s decision could be lifted once they receive the instrument against doping in Angolan sport.

However, many are concerned about how long the reinstatement process could take, in the midst of competitions to define quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Angola has already secured the presence of its women’s handball team, and has qualified rower André Matias, and in canoeing, Manuel António and Benilson Sanda.
